Kettering University, a national leader in experiential STEM and business education, is seeking a talented individual to serve as the Head of the Department of Liberal Studies.

The University recently re-organized its administrative structure which now includes the College of Sciences and Liberal Arts, the College of Engineering, the Graduate School and the School of Management. The Head of the Department of Liberal Studies will work with the Dean of the College of Sciences and Liberal Arts, departmental colleagues and faculty and administrative colleagues across the University to enhance an already-essential part of a Kettering education: the integration of the humanities, social sciences and arts into its programs in STEM and management; to expand interdisciplinary offerings; to consider developing new majors and/or minors, to review Kettering’s general education requirements to ensure that they meet the need of Kettering students; and to increase recruitment and retention.

Currently, the Department of Liberal Studies provides a broad range of general education courses in communication, economics, humanities, and social sciences; faculty backgrounds include anthropology, Asian studies, economics, history, literature, political science, rhetoric and composition, and sociology. The faculty in the department teach a wide variety of courses for students majoring in science, engineering, and business. In addition to Liberal Studies, the College of Sciences and Liberal Arts is home to the Departments of Chemistry/Biology/Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics.

In addition to the curricular work described above, the Head of the Department of Liberal Studies will be responsible for monitoring all operations and activities within the department and will regularly teach courses. She or he will administer day-to-day operations, organize and conduct department meetings, oversee department committees, and prepare reports for the College.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience creating and executing interdisciplinary programs, particularly STEM+ or STEAM;
- Demonstrated excellence in leadership and administrative effectiveness in higher education;
- Experience with accreditation, assessment, and continuous improvement in higher education;
- Knowledge of the STEM curricula;
- Background in experiential learning programs, and
- Successful grant-writing.

Job Specific Required Qualifications

- An earned PhD in an academic discipline within the Liberal Arts;
- Demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical practices and research trends in the Liberal Arts;
- Demonstrated excellence and recent accomplishments in teaching, research, and service at a level required for appointment as a tenured professor within the Department of Liberal Studies;
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
- Experience with program and curriculum development with a commitment to student centered learning, and
- Understanding and commitment to Kettering University Values
